Quick update from my last post: Procore pushed the release date for the new Project Overview from December 31st to May 30th. Delays like this happen from time to time. The good news is that, as I showed in the previous post, you can still enable this update yourself using Procore Explore if you want to get ahead of it.
I also recently released my newest course, Fieldset Optimization. This is one of the most powerful company-level admin capabilities Procore offers when it comes to shaping how your teams actually use the platform.
While building that course, it reminded me of something I’ve been wanting to say for a while.
Procore has put a tremendous amount of effort into giving customers the ability to customize the platform. Between permissions, fieldsets, workflows, and other controls, companies can tailor Procore in ways that simply weren’t possible years ago. If your company hasn’t spent time doing this, you’re leaving a lot of value on the table.
That said, I see something happen quite often.
Many companies try to make their processes “foolproof” by layering on more controls — more required fields, more approvals, more restrictions. Sometimes that’s necessary. But a lot of the time, it goes too far.
There’s a better solution.
Training.
I’m a huge believer in training. In my experience, with very few exceptions, top performers get there through training and development. I’m not just talking about athletes or sports teams — I’m talking about businesses across all industries.
Strong companies invest in their people. They train them, develop them, and promote from within.
I’ve seen this firsthand. A construction company I worked for invested heavily in training. They had a dedicated team that regularly evaluated their training programs and updated them as the industry changed. They had clear employee reviews and advancement guidelines, all carefully managed to maintain compliance. It’s no surprise they’re now a growing, multi-billion-dollar company. While many companies struggled during COVID, they continued to grow.
On the other end of the spectrum, one of my first clients told me they nearly went out of business during COVID. They had no training plan at all — and it showed in more ways than one.
While Procore gives us powerful tools to create structure and controls, those tools work best when they support well-trained teams — not replace training altogether.
Developing your people into the construction professionals you want them to be pays off over time. You get a stronger workforce, better adoption of your tools, longer employee retention, and ultimately a stronger company.
I do hope you take the time to check out my new Fieldset Optimization course. Regardless of how much — or how little — formal training your company currently has, taking the time to properly optimize your Procore platform can create an immediate payoff when it’s paired with the right training approach.
